Highlighting is without doubt my favourite step when it comes to makeup. It's an instant transformer that can change everything about your look. Skin looks more healthy, colours pop and in some cases, you'll literally be needing sunglasses to counter the reflection off your cheekbones. Safe to say it's a trend that's definitely not going away any time soon and today I've teamed up with Sephora to talk about five of the best highlighters that you need to know about.
Who doesn't love a combination of the two? A few weeks back I was on set for a super exciting shoot with one of my favourite drugstore brands, Rimmel as part of their Rimmel Road Trip series. Twelve influencers across six colourful cities throughout the UK, exploring new places and most importantly getting to chat all about makeup along the way! Brighton is one of my favourite cities in the South and who better to come along for the ride and show me all the best spots than born and bred Brightonian (and obvious bestie), Suzie!
We spent the afternoon on the pier, ate doughnuts by the sea and had some heated but friendly competition when it came to the arcade games! Then headed back to our hotel to get ready together for our night out in the city. Since the purchase of it's travel size back in October my love for Oribe's cult Dry Texturising Spray has been growing at an alarming rate. I promised myself I would never shell out for the full size, priced at a whopping £38 when the miniature alone is £18. And yet here it is, sitting smugly on my dressing table after a frenzied episode on the Space NK site which I'm sure you'll be hearing more about soon.
I had a short fling with the Bumble & Bumble Dryspun Finish before giving into the Oribe hype - hailed as a 'purse friendly alternative' (although gram for gram the latter actually comes out cheaper) it has the same premise but I find it gives a more of a 'fluffy' effect - maybe not the best for those with frizz prone locks. Oribe's offering really is unmatched in it's ability to provide texture, volume and the perfect undressed look to your hair without any stickiness or extra weight. Lets just hope this can lasts at least a year (or two) to justify the cost, although my inner big hair cravings are telling me it probably won't!

By now I'm sure my love for the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders is well documented. Once a complete powder-phobe (mattified skin is really not my forte) I now can't seem to go a day without wearing my favourite all over setting shade - Dim Light. Undetectable on the skin it leaves the softest glow while keeping everything in place without a hint of cakeyness. The only set back of course is they eye-watering £38.00 price tag - ouch. One plus is that I've been using this non stop for months and by the looks of things have barely made a dent in it, but for those searching for a cheaper alternative in the luminising powder game, I think I've found a pretty good substitute.
Bourjois seem to be bringing out winner after winner when it comes to their new releases and one of my favourites so far this year has been the Java Rice Powder, which not only comes in just the darn prettiest little pot, it's also packed full of radiance. The first noticeable difference between the two is shot a of shimmer running through it as apposed to the sparkle-less 'gleam' of the Ambient Lighting Powder. Once dusted over the skin though (my brush of choice for both being the fluffy Real Techniques Powder Brush) this becomes undetectable, reflecting light and imparting a dewey looking glow which also works well as a highlight when applied more liberally to the cheekbones. I also find it to be slightly more shine-absorbing, lasting a few hours longer across my oily cheeks and nose.
If I had to pick just one, it would have to be Hourglass's offering - there's just something about that genius formula that can't be beaten, but Bourjois have served up some stiff competition which definitely takes the title of the best drugstore powder I've ever come across and at £9.99, it's a whole lot easier to stomach!
